The Beach Triangle Residents Association has had a busy year. Some of the activities we have been involved with this past year are summarized below.
The BTRA has:
- Monitored the development of the Rainsford and Queen proposed condominium development and distributed updates and information throughout the neighbourhood through the Triangle Topics Newsletter.
- Worked with volunteers to found the Beach Triangle 2008 “FunFest” committee to develop a Triangle-wide party.
- Continued to monitor the work of the Toronto Waterfront Revitalization Corporation and plans for the Lake Ontario Park.
- Maintained the BTRA Web Site.
- Worked with the Woodbine Park Residents Association to learn about their successes with the Neighbourhood Watch program and worked to gauge the interest level of residents in developing a Triangle-based program.
- Monitored the health and management of our urban forest. Prepared relevant articles for the Triangle Topics Newsletter (Emerald Ash Borer, loss of trees in Triangle).
- Monitored zoning applications.
- Worked with the Woodbine Park, Balmy Beach, Kew Beach, Beach Lakefront Neighbourhood and Harbourfront resident associations.
- Supported the Beach Business Improvement Association.
- Participated as members of the Confederation of Resident Ratepayers Association.
- Closely monitored all environmental issues.
- Participated in the Ashbridges Bay Treatment Plant Neighbourhood Liaison Committee.
- Continued to question and monitor establishment of a mega gas-fired electricity generation plant in the Portlands.
- Issued two editions of an expanded Triangle Topics newsletter, featuring reports on area history.
- Covered costs of the expanding newsletter through increased advertising revenue.
- Organized Annual Lawn Sale with Woodbine Park Residents Association.
- Continue to monitor the status of conditions surrounding the Greenwood Teletheatre liquor license -- conditions the BTRA had fought for almost ten years ago.
Yet another busy year! We feel the BTRA continues to be effective, where other organizations have struggled for the following reasons:
- Defining issue: The serious negative impact of the racetrack and subsequent concerns about the Greenwood Teletheatre caused residents to band together.
- Ongoing issues: Ashbridges Bay Treatment Plant, other environmental concerns and zoning issues.
- Core Veterans: People who "know the ropes" and care enough to volunteer.
- New Blood: People with new skills and enthusiasm to learn the ropes and offer expanded perspectives.
