Front Yard Parking By-law Passed

In July the new, GTA-wide, conditions on front yard parking were approved by City Council. These may be viewed at www.toronto.ca/transportation/offstreet/res_fy.htm. Following is a summary of the conditions.

Removal of Parking Pads (two incentive programs are provided):

  1. Licensed Locations: The City will, at its own expense:
    • Plant a tree in the boulevard in front of the house.
    • Re-sod the area.
    • Remove the curb cut.
    • Provide free downspout disconnection.
    • Offer a free water conservation audit.
    • Provide one year’s free Permit Parking, for one vehicle.
    Note: Reinstallation is not permitted for a period of five years.
  2. Unauthorized Parking Pads: The City will, at its own expense:
    • Re-sod the area.
    • Provide free downspout disconnection.
    • Offer a free water conservation audit.
    • Note: This is limited to a maximum of five locations per year.

Maximizing Landscaped Open Space:

Protection of Street Trees: Paving next to City trees must comply with the following:

  1. Small Trees (under 10 cm (4”)):
    • Permeable surface 1.2 to 2.4 m (4”- 8’) from the tree.
    • No mechanical excavation within 2.4 m of the tree.
  2. Medium Trees (10-50 cm (4”- 20”)):
    • Permeable surface 1.6 to 2.4 m (5’2”- 8’) from the tree.
    • No mechanical excavation within 2.4 m of the tree.
  3. Large Trees (over 50 cm (20”)):
    • Permeable surface 2.4 to 4 m (8’-13’) from the tree.
    • No mechanical excavation within 4 m of the tree.
