Port Lands

After environmental assessments and many studies, we may finally see some new development in the Port Lands. First things to happen will be at Cherry Street and the old Essarock cement plant. There will be a new Cherry Street bridge across the Keating Channel and a new, longer Lake Shore Boulevard bridge across a widened mouth of the Don River. A lot of the work will be in water management as most of the Port Lands are in a floodplain. The study area also includes the lands south of Eastern Ave. to Coxwell which are designated as employment lands. We may yet see a new retail plaza in this location as part of a mixed use development. The city is still fielding suggestions for uses for the old Hearn Generating Plant. The future of the Gardner Expressway east of Jarvis is still undecided but options for its future will impact the Port Lands and development in the area. The TTC is also looking at options on servicing the Port Lands by streetcar lines but there is a problem with the power transmission lines along Commissioners Street.
